UDOSA BLOG

This is an exclusive blog for registered members, for us to document our experience both in and out of UDSS, and the correlation inbetween if any?.

Okay now this is my first blog going into some detail on the part I played in uniting all the sets for the 40th anniversary and beyond.

In January 2021 as part of the 40th Anniversary Celebrations, I, “Greg Ekhator” was nominated to chair the anniversary committee by the pioneer 86 Alumni Set.

Professor Ileogben Adeoye and I, decided upon consultation to expand the remit to include all sets. Prior to this, all UDOSA Sets and Chapters functioned independently with no coordination between them. However that changed with this 40th anniversary with the opportunity to unite all the sets for a common goal.

The first four months were smooth-sailing after the initial challenge Prof Adeoye and I had, of persuading pioneer set Exco (Greg and Prof are pioneer UDOSAN’s) to make this about all the sets of UDOSA, and not just about pioneer set. Thankfully we all agreed.

From the onset, one of the motivating factors that made me agree to be chairman of the 40th Anniversary Committee was the rude awakening i got the previous year. We were experiencing the onset of a global Covid Pandemic and the UNIVERSITY OF BENIN Demonstration Secondary School, could not demonstrate how to continue studying online until the deadly pestilence passed over. This was very painful because I am supposed to be a leading African expert on E-Learning after producing educational software and curriculum for some of the top 8 universities and corporations in the world.

I recall giving a presentation to Pioneer 86 Set Exco, and it quickly became clear to all of us who met over Zoom that we don’t have the numbers to pull this off successfully ie: to fund an LMS (Learning Management System) that will cost about NGN9 million at the time (as quoted).

At the time, I wished all of UDOSA could come together and we could then do greater things. Little did i know that 2021 heralded our 40th anniversary and I will be graciously nominated unopposed to represent Pioneer set. How could I refuse?

9 months later, with a lot of water under the bridge I am glad to present before you the LMS accessible via www.unibendsslms.org which will be presented to UDSS School Management Board and Principal at the 40th anniversary celebrations on behalf of those UDOSANS who support 21st century blended learning.

This LMS package is sponsored by some benevolent UDOSA members who are committed to doing their best to equip UDSS with the latest 21st century learning tools supported by research data ie: the top ten performing schools in Edo state and Nigeria have an LMS (Learning Management System) as part of their VLE (Virtual Learning Environment).

Alongside the LMS is a package to install 50 desktop computers in a transformed Technical Drawing room to become a second state of the art ICT Laboratory. Complete with WIFI and 2 solar panels to guarantee 24/7 power. It will also include CCTV cameras and the services of an onsite ICT engineer, to guarantee security and maintenance of installations. The LMS is fully mobile ready; programmed with mobile first technology. When students browse the LMS with a mobile phone, it appears clearly as with a mobile app and not miniature screen of a computers view. See clear rendering below:

There are other ongoing initiatives by UDOSA including collating all the commendable work done by individual sets so far; for maintenance and coordination of effort for the benefit of UDSS students. There is also the Endowment fund started by the pioneer principal Mrs Mazumdar for best performing students. This initiative has now broadened in scope with members now contributing to various development project endowment funds.

As part of the NEEDS ASSESSMENT research carried out by UDOSA we also found out that UDSS is in danger of losing eligibility to host WAEC/NECO exams for UDSS students due to burgeoning students numbers and not big enough facilities. This led to discussions of funding a purpose built Assembly Hall, as UDSS still does not have one and or refurbishing the Technical Drawing room. Architects drawings and land have been mapped out for this project. After the anniversary there are plans in place to source funding for this as well.

Now what are your thoughts about this?

Don’t forget to ignore any grammatical mistakes, although i don’t expect Mrs Idah to forgive me if she finds any? lol

    1. Ha ha ha @ MVP!! Thank you!

We understand our people, we understand UDSS challenges and we understand enough of global challenges to solve our issues.
I just had to do what i had to do to get us together and keep us together as much as possible so there is something to build on in the future. Of course now UDSS is now equipped with an LMS for blended learning with a set up that cannot be vandalised.

Hopefully our progress so far with an LMS thats 75% complete will encourage others to give more towards our target 15.6M; establishing 50 desktops, 2 solar panels, CCTV & onsite ICT engineer in a refurbished TD room to state of the art ICT Lab.

  1. Good evening UDOSANS,
This is my 2nd blog post.

I have just done a round of canvassing for N 6 million regarding 40 desktop computers and 10 laptops as the minimum required infrastructure required to ensure those UDSS students who’s parents can afford mobile phones do not have an advantage over those who cannot afford mobile phones for their children before the launch of the LMS on October 8th.

We UDOSANS are fully aware that the UDOSA all sets, Greg Ekhator and Prof Ileogben Adeoye of Pioneer set brought together have raised in total over N25 million for the anniversary celebrations. This is a feat and just above what was forecasted when Greg Ekhator was the chairman in May 2021.

The time has come for we UDOSANS to ask the petinent question:
    1. Why can’t NGN 6 million of this N25 Million be set aside for 40 desktops and 10 laptops so UDSS students can start enjoying the benefits of the LMS. In other words . Why wait for 2 years time when a signature building not yet built be completely built?
    2. What if the governor of Edo state or president of Nigeria will graduate in the next 2 years and their (including OUR Edo state) destiny could be short changed because of this delay??

  2. Q & A Session with our beloved ex-UDSS Biology Teacher “Ms Helena Addai”

This is a first of its kind Q&A Blog for UDOSA (in a relaxed informal setting), to bring us together with the teachers who moulded us and with who we have spent a good part of young lives. To reminisce of our best moments, so we can be inspired to pass it on to present UDSS students on the occasion of this 40th anniversary celebration.

GREG EKHATOR: 1. Can you tell us the short version of what brought about UDSS, why and how you got involved and the part of Mrs Mazumdar’s vision that drove you to make us achieve being Number 1 in Nigeria in 1986?

MS ADDAI: Thank you very much for hosting me. As you are all aware the University already had a KG to Primary School established ….. Click on Video/image below for more.

Continuation of the Q&A session with one of the dear teachers who moulded us. To reminisce of our best moments of our young lives back then, so we can be inspired to pass it on to present UDSS students on the occasion of this 40th anniversary celebration.
This video starts with the continuation of yesterdays answer on the beginning of UDSS.

GREG EKHATOR: 2. When we were in UDSS, you were one of the youngest but jovial teachers and I dare say perhaps because of your youthfulness at the time one of the most driven who’s yes meant yes and no meant no . Have you mellowed since or perhaps transformed since your UDSS days?
    3. After the first set graduated in 1986, when we attained best in Nigeria, what were your first thoughts of that achievement, and how has that affected you positively since?

MS ADDAI: I have a good relationship with the ex-students, and uptill now I do! She fondly recalls some of our ex-students Femi Ajorin, Kafayat, she recalls some more of us in later video segments.

    1. Answer 4 to 6 of the Q & A Session with our beloved ex-UDSS Biology Teacher “Ms Helena Addai”

Then asks Questions4, 5 and 6

GREG EKHATOR: What did you like the most about UDSS?
      5. What was your biggest challenge in UDSS?
      6. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary, thank God we have finally got all the sets of UDOSA together. What 3 projects will you recommend we take on as a body, albeit we know its now completely in our hands?

MS ADDAI: The highlights of Ms Addai’s answer:
UDSS kids were awesome to teach mainly because all of us without exception came from a privileged background.
She recalls seeing all our faces in assembly moments reciting hymns and songs:
      – All things bright and beautiful.
      – Stand up, stand up for Jesus
      – Rock of Ages
She could hardly recall any challenges apart from the time of “GHANA MUST GO” in 1983, which she didn’t take seriously according to her.
      In extra highlights:
She mentions that UDSS is currently challenged with different distractions which are really basic such as good desks and chairs, doors and hinges. That we should focus on these before embarking on on major projects as an ICT centre.
She mentions that ELEARNING/LMS is one of the basics in the 21st century and is a bare necessity.

Greg Ekhator on his part in discussion, on behalf of all UDOSA responded that while she is absolutely right. He defended the current approach of a brand new future ICT centre while working with existing buildings in the interim. He emphasised that in the first 5 months as chairman of united 40th anniversary committee, he got to appreciate that – UDSS is in danger of being ineligible for WAEC/NECO exams due to burgeoning student numbers. 1. Answer 6 & 7 of the Q & A Session with our beloved ex-UDSS Biology Teacher “Ms Helena Addai”

Continuation of the Q&A session with one of the dear teachers who moulded us. To reminisce of our best moments of our young lives back then, so we can be inspired to pass it on to present UDSS students on the occasion of this 40th anniversary celebration.
This video starts with the continuation of yesterdays answer 6. Then asks Questions 7

GREG EKHATOR: 6. On the occasion of the 40th anniversary, thank God we have finally got all the sets of UDOSA together. What 3 projects will you recommend we take on as a body, albeit we know its now completely in our hands?
        7. Are you in touch with the former teachers, and do you have an association of ex-teachers of UDSS?

MS ADDAI: The highlights of Ms Addai’s answer:
She stresses there must be understanding that maintenance of the school is separate and arguably more important than legacy projects, because legacy projects are meant to add to existing infratructure not replace it.
Greg had to clarify the importance of legacy projects due to the new building requirement from his experience as chairman of the united 40th anniversary committee.
Greg recalls how UDSS started with pioneer students attending afternoon session at Uniben staff school.
In Question 7: Ms Addai, confirms there is a platform for ex-teachers and mentions the names of participants.
Greg pushed to know the numbers of potential ex-teacher anniversary attendees.
Ms Addai meticulously informed us of the issues involved regarding covid protocols. She revealed BREAKING NEWS: Pioneer Principal Mrs Mazumdar’s doctors have emphatically disallowed her to travel to Nigeria for the anniversary

Greg Ekhator asked if she has heard of some murmurings regarding disatisfaction with invitation of teachers by UDOSA…. Watch her response on this issue and many others in this summary. Click below image of Ms Addai to watch it NOW!:

Continuation of the Q&A session with one of the dear teachers who moulded us. To reminisce of our best moments of our young lives back then, so we can be inspired to pass it on to present UDSS students on the occasion of this 40th anniversary celebration.

GREG EKHATOR: 8. You are one of, and arguably the biggest draw of our 40th anniversary celebration in about 3 weeks time. Do you have any message to prime us for meeting you again after over 32 years for most of us?
          9. The world is currently experiencing a global pandemic (Covid-19), and we all have to deal with new public health guidelines. (a) How are you coping with keeping safe at over perhaps 65 now? (b) As our ex teacher, and also a biologiest, known for going the extra mile with his students.
If this was 1984 with you Biology teacher of UDSS; what will you tell us if we were in school to ensure we were safe while UDSS wasn’t locked down.
          10. Thank you so much Ma, it has been a great pleasure to host you, and we look forward to doing this again soon, either just before as follow up, or immediately after the anniversary. Therefore my last question is:
Do you have any message for your listeners, viewers or readers of this? As the next session will be live with interactive questions and answers.

MS ADDAI: The highlights of Ms Addai’s answer:
She says she is friends with most of her former students and speaks regularly with us including Robin Oyovbaire, Benjamin Edafiaga, Debo Ogude, Irese Oguguah, Henry Igbinowanhia and Bawo Egbe.

In closing remarks she expresses great pride in her ex-students and gives God almighty all the glory. She prays for peace and prosperity and that our children takes after us and impacts the collective society as we are impacting our generation and generations to come.

PROFESSOR CHRISTIANA OMOIFO: Hightlights of Q&A session –
          – Impact of UDSS since she is now a professor
          – The vision, drive and push of Mrs Mazumdar/Iweze towards our excellence
          – How high our calibre was such that Igbinedion secondary school had to poach with vivid example of teachers we recall very well, including attempts to poach her too
          – She recalls Mr Onah, Mr Williams, late Mrs Omo Osagie and late Mr Aigbe.
          – She gave great kudos to the first set of UDSS, because pioneer Principal Mazumdar was insistent that the standard was kept, and indeed it was for a few years even after she left.

            – She absolutely loved the University of Benin environment as it was an established citadel of learning and the standards shone through!
Regarding Question 5 about challenges, she struggled to recall any apart from a difficult student. Her comments on this student had to be redacted for data privacy / protection. We wonder who he is, such that she recalled his youthful exuberance back then?

PROFESSOR CHRISTIANA OMOIFO: Hightlights of Q&A #6 session –
          – She reckons the LMS is the most appropriate project needed by UDSS right now, especially because COVID 19 taught us a big lesson during lockdown when UDSS students stopped learning. She said even the free version of Google Classroom with its courses was not utilized. Nevertheless: she is thrilled UDSS students now have a world class standard Learning Management System (LMS) with complete curriculum online!

Greg said he will provide her with login credentials, since she is requesting for it now, especially because she is an Education professor to additionally lend credence of fitness for purpose in Nigeria.

She also asked for expansion in accessibility, so its not only available to those who own computers and mobile phones. Greg responded with the current LMS package of 40 desktops and 10 laptops the original 40th anniversary committee is currently fundraising for. …..

GREG EKHATOR: Madam: On behalf of all UDOSANS, I want to thank you for being the principal of our dear Alma mater “UDSS.” You are doing a terrific job with the resources made available, and your cooperation with UDOSA for this anniversary to establish a full fledged Learning Management System (LMS) with the curriculum now online is testament of leaps and bounds accomplishment under your leadership as the Principal steering the ship.
          1. Can you tell us what attracted you to UDSS, and your current vision for UDSS?
          2. In February of this 40th anniversary year, UDOSA decided a “Needs Assessment” was required to establish what the urgent requirements of UDSS were. This led to us designing a survey, which then informed us :- online resources is the most pressing requirement of UDSS, followed by more classrooms. This has thankfully led to an LMS with the complete UDSS curriculum now online, and allows teacher training via CBT. Please tell us what is the bare minimum infrastructure so this online resource can be utilised properly so the students can become the best in Edo state and Nigeria in the near future?
          3. The next most pressing requirement as survey data indicates is more Classrooms. UDOSA is currently looking into this and will continue doing so, however could you elaborate how many more classrooms are required and if the University of Benin is aware, and has any plans for this happening?

UDSS PRINCIPAL MRS MODUPE AGUGBA: Hightlights of Q&A #1-3 session –
          – Her vision is for UDSS to become the best secondary school in Edo state and Nigeria. For UDSS students to be excellently prepared allowing them excel in their chosen life endeavour.
          – On the Learning Management System (LMS), she says UDSS will need at least some more desktops and some laptops for teachers. In addition the teacher training is key here so they can apply the LMS adequately to impact Teachers and thus the Students.
          – On number of classrooms: She said UDSS will need 5 more classrooms each for JSS and SSS respectively.
          – On student numbers, she said there are 674 SSS students, gave a rough estimate of about 1300 in total for both Senior and Junior Secondary Schools. …..

          1. Question 3 to 6 of Q & A Session with the current principal of UDSS Senior Secondary School (2021) – “Mrs Modupe O. Agugba”

This is a first of its kind Q&A Blog for UDOSA (in a relaxed informal setting), to acquaint us with our dear alma mater, so we can be inspired to give back based on knowledge of what obtains currently in UDSS students on the occasion of this 40th anniversary celebration. It starts with continuation of her answer to Question 3 ie the most pressing requirement response in Needs Assessment survey.

GREG EKHATOR: 4. One of the questions asked in the survey was: How can the teachers help UDSS become the best in Edo state? The most selected options, was “Learn new strategies.”
Will the LMS help the teachers learn new strategies that you dispense to them as their head teacher and trainer of SSS?
            5. What is your biggest challenge in UDSS at the moment?
            6. In one of the survey questions, it was asked what could be done to optimise the standard of UDSS? Most survey respondents said – Provide better working environment. Can you speak on behalf of the teachers who responded, what exactly this means ie current vs desired working environment. I ask because UDOSA might be able to push for this as well.

UDSS PRINCIPAL MRS MODUPE AGUGBA: Hightlights of Q&A #4-6 session –
            – Regarding the Teachers survey response of “Learning new strategies.” Greg asked how the LMS will help them learn new strategies. She described how the teachers will be required to first understand how the LMS assists them to teach better, and in the process they will learn new strategies to impact knowledge.
            – On biggest challenges: (a) Lateness- with 5% of students persistently late. (b) Textbooks; about 7% of students are not equipped by their parents/guardians with the appropriate text books.
            – Regarding working environment as the survey response indicated: She was asked to help interprete what the teachers meant: She cited 2 different employers for teachers, salary arrears with previous VC’s, as the present VC has taken care of all arrears she met and always pays on time. Desired working environment is one of constant training with seminars and workshops done regularly……

            1. Question 7 to 9 of Q & A Session with the current principal of UDSS Senior Secondary School (2021) – “Mrs Modupe O. Agugba”

It starts with continuation of her answer to Question 6 ie better working environment in UDSS.

GREG EKHATOR: 7. Is UDSS currently in partnership with any external organisation that supplies teacher training modules, or interested in such, especially via online training perhaps from the UK or America?
